Turning Six

I know, I've stopped blogging about birthdays this year. We had a super fun family party for Drama Queen's 25th on Sunday, but someone else was in charge of taking the pics so I don't even have one for you. I, on the other hand, got to sit next to Curly and take pictures of his sweet face while he opened gifts and enjoyed his cake.

I just couldn't resist sharing some of them with you.

I loved how his cake turned out! I bought the little Monster Trucks for just over a dollar a piece and they are Hot Wheels with little keys to launch them, so they are much nicer than most cake toppers.

So usually when I make cakes, I put a whole cake mix in each of my pans and then they grow a little higher than the top so I can cut them flat to stabilize the cake.

The kids love it when I do that because they get to sample the warm pieces from the top. In fact, they were a little upset when I put the whole thing in a ziploc bag and put it in the freezer with the rest of the cakes. It's so much easier to frost a cake after the layers are frozen!

Then tonight I pulled everything from the freezer and I frosted the cake just the regular way with the two layers. I pulled out the pieces of the tops and stacked them on each other to create a ridge in a diagonal pattern. Then I started frosting again. I didn't mind when pieces crumbed up a little or a spot got missed. I wanted it to look like a mud bog.

When I was finished, the Drama Queen and I crumbled the last little bits of cake so they looked like dirt. Then we randomly placed the trucks to look like they were climbing and even sliding off the cake. It left me no room to write "Happy Birthday!" so I did it on the sides.

I just thought it was so fun and easy and using the extra cake made it so I didn't have 2 inches of frosting on the top. Much cheaper and better for eating.

And it was delicious too.
Happy Birthday, Curly!
