The Final Game

I'm so sorry to leave you hanging for a couple of days! You still don't know what happened at the championship game. You know that Curly's team had an undefeated season, 14-0.
They have a great little team and on Tuesday, they won both games in a double-header, putting them in the championship game.
It has been a week full of hundred-degree weather and the games were brutal. Curly did a great job on 1st, but they were all a little sluggish. Even though they had beaten Elite on 3 other occasions, by the bottom of the 4th it was 12-7 against our Blue Sox.
Our boys clawed their way back to 12-12 with 2 outs and bases loaded. Curly was on 3rd and one of his best friends was at bat with 2 strikes. Curly had a killer lead and when they threw it down, all he could do was run. He threw himself full out in the slide, but sadly, came up about 6 inches short of the plate when he was tagged.
The overtime went quickly with Elite scoring 1 and a line drive to the shortstop finishing things up for us. Game over and season over all at once.

I gathered his uniforms today where he had dropped them in his devastated state and I washed them in a daze. We have lived it for so long now. How can it be over?
