This the PICC line that runs through my sweetie's upper arm and directly through a major vein in his chest. Three times a day, 8:00 AM, 4:00 PM, and midnight, I take off that green cap, open the valve and for a very literal moment, I have his life in my hands.
I shoot it full of saline, then carefully push the antibiotics over 3-5 minutes. More saline, then heparin to keep clots from forming in the line before I cover it up with a new clean cap, close the valve and pull off my gloves.
With our careful care, his shoulder is beginning to heal, but the pocket of pus is returning to his foot. (Don't look if you are squeamish!)
Poor guy. What more can we do?
