That's Why I Married Him

I think it's funny that the Dog Walker put that post together for yesterday. You know, he didn't even ask anyone who their favorite group was, he just took a wild guess. My sweetie likes "Kiss" but his favorite group has always been Aerosmith.

So I have to tell you a story about that. Way back in the early 80s, Aerosmith was huge and my sweetie was a true fan. He had every one of their cassette tapes (I know, but there was no such thing as CDs or Ipods then.) He had them all organized in a little brown case and it was his pride and joy.

I, on the other hand, was NOT an Aerosmith fan. I thought they were loud and obnoxious and mostly immoral. I preferred a much more mellow sound, things like Queen, Rod Stewart, and Air Supply.

Now I must confess that I was not a very nice person when I was 17 years old. I had made a habit of manipulating guys into doing what I wanted them to do. Unfortunately, my sweetie also fell victim to this arm-twisting. He knew I didn't like his music, so he would bet me ridiculous things and then when I won, he would destroy one of his beloved tapes.

It took a couple of weeks for me to convince him to systematically destroy those tapes one at a time. Our favorite way was to throw them up in the air as hard as we could and them watch the tape unravel from them as they fell to the earth. We pulled all the tape out of them several times just to see how big the pile would get.

I should have been much nicer and more tolerant and I have to admit that 30 years later I am appalled at my immature behavior, but it did prove one thing to me at the time...that he loved me more than anything and he would do anything for me.

And nothing he possessed was more important than me.

That's why I married him.

  1. True confession: most music from the '80s was bad (some much worse than others, but in general not good) -- yes, I do remember that decade quite well (I graduated HS in 1983).

Whew, glad I finally got that out there!! Sorry if any feelings are hurt ;o)

Am so happy you received proof positive of your sweetie's true feelings!! That was quite a sacrifice for him, I'm sure!!

  2. I distinctly remember this scene unfolding in grandma's driveway one day. I couldn't have been more disgusted-- or so I thought . . . Later you started listening to country music. Yuck!

  3. Maaaawm!, I am so incredibly appalled at you. Seriously. It is a wonder he married you, you were such a trouble maker to sweet old dad. Poor tapes... Just a few months ago Dad was worried that I had thrown out any important tapes when I was cleaning the family room. And yeah...there were big hair rock tapes in that pile...

  4. Tommy used to work on the Docks..." I am with you Drama Queen. It was mean and some 80's music rocks--some is definitely cheesy and sucks too though. Aerosmith is good though! Oh I guess I should sing an Aerosmith song...How about..."every time that I look in the mirror
all these lines on my face getting clearer
    the past is gone
it went by like dusk to dawn
    isn't that the way

  5. I've always really liked Aerosmith. But I do understand not being able to tolerate your significant others music. My husband likes Weird Al and I've been dying to toss that tape out a window for years.
